Capture a Screen Shot with Mac OS X

1. To capture the entire desktop, press Command-Shift-3. The screen shot will be automatically saved as a PNG file on your desktop.

To copy the entire desktop, press Command-Control-Shift-3. The screen shot will be placed on your clipboard for you to paste into another program.
To capture a portion of the desktop, pressCommand-Shift-4. A cross-hair cursor will appear and you can click and drag to select the area you wish to capture. When you release the mouse button, the screen shot will be automatically saved as a PNG file on your desktop. (The file is saved as PDF in Mac OS 10.3 and earlier.)
To capture a specific application window, pressCommand-Shift-4, then press the Spacebar. The cursor will change to a camera, and you can move it around the screen. As you move the cursor over an application window, the window will be highlighted. The entire window does not need to be visible for you to capture it. When you have the cursor over a window you want to capture, just click the mouse button and the screen shot will be saved as a PNG file on your desktop. (The file is saved as PDF in Mac OS 10.3 and earlier.)
Add Control to the two shortcuts above to place the screen shot on the clipboard instead of saving it to the desktop.
Another method for capturing screen shots in Mac OS X is by using the bundled Apple utility, Grab, located in the Applications > Utilities folder. Grab is useful if you need to include a cursor or a menu in your screen shot, or if you want to save your screen shot to TIFF format. To include a cursor, first go to Grab Preferences and select the cursor icon you wish to have in your screen shot. To capture the screen with Grab, run Grab, then choose of the capture modes from the "Capture" menu: Selection, Window, Screen, Timed Screen.
When you choose the Selection mode in Grab, you can capture a specific region of the screen by dragging around it. Grab will display a tooltip showing the size of the region you have selected and the screen shot will open in a window when you release the mouse button. The cursor will not be included.
When you choose the Window mode in Grab, an instruction window will appear asking you to select the window you wish to capture, then click the "Choose Window" button. When you click the button, the instructions will disappear and the window you click ill be captured, including the mouse cursor at the position where you click (if a cursor was selected in Preferences).
When you choose the Screen mode in Grab, an instruction window will appear asking you to click the screen when you are ready to capture. The mouse cursor will be included in your screen shot at the position where you click (if a cursor was selected in Preferences).
When you choose the Timed Screen mode in Grab, an instruction window will appear, allowing you to prepare your screen for capture. When you are ready, press the "Start Timer" button and you will have ten seconds before the screen is captured. This allows you to open menus and sub-menus, if necessary. After ten seconds the entire screen will be captured. The mouse cursor will be included in your screen shot if a cursor was selected in Preferences.

About the root user

The user named "root" is a special user in UNIX-style operating systems that has read and write privileges to all areas of the file system. The root user should only be used for specific administration or monitoring tasks. After completing a task as the root user, you should log out of Mac OS X and log back in using a normal or administrator account. You should disable root access if you do not use it often.

The root user does not appear in Users or Accounts preferences.

Important notes

Only the owner of a computer or its designated administrator(s) should have an administrator account or the root password.
Any user with an administrator account can become the root user or reset the root password.
A root password should be difficult to guess, containing both numbers and letters within the first eight characters.
A root user has the ability to access other users' files.
The root user has the ability to relocate or remove required system files and to introduce new files in locations that are protected from other users.

How to enable the root user

Mac OS X 10.5 or later

From the Finder's Go menu, choose Utilities.
Open Directory Utility.
Click the lock in the Directory Utility window.
Enter an administrator account name and password, then click OK.
Choose Enable Root User from the Edit menu.
Enter the root password you wish to use in both the Password and Verify fields, then click OK.

Note: If you are troubleshooting an issue that prevents you from logging in as an administrator, follow the steps in this article to enable the root user.

Mac OS X 10.4.x or earlier

Click the Finder icon in the Dock.
From the Go menu, choose Applications.
Open the Utilities folder.
Open the NetInfo Manager utility.
Click the lock in the NetInfo Manager window.
Enter an administrator account name and password, then click OK.
For Mac OS X 10.2 and later, choose Enable Root User from the Security menu.
For Mac OS X 10.0 and 10.1, choose Security from the Domain menu, then Enable Root User from the submenu.
If you have not previously set a root password, an alert box may appear that says "NetInfo Error," indicating that the password is blank. Click OK.

How to log in as root

Use these steps for Mac OS X 10.2 or later:

If you are logged in, choose Log Out from the Apple menu.
If you are logging in from a list of usernames with pictures, click Other.
In the Name field, type: root
In the Password field, type the password you defined in the steps above.

After enabling the root user, you must log out from Mac OS X and log back in as the root user. Logging in to Mac OS X from a list of usernames is the default behavior for later versions of Mac OS X. Logging in by typing your username in a text entry field is the default behavior in earlier versions of Mac OS X. You can choose either method in Login preferences. The root user does not appear in the list, so you need the text entry option. If necessary, follow these steps to change the login method to text entry:

What is the root directory?

It helps to know that the term root is used in two distinct ways: The "root user" and the "root directory." The root directory is the highest directory level of a disk. The files and folders you see when you open (double-click) your hard disk icon are the contents of that disk's root directory. A directory is represented graphically as a folder. You may know your home directory as your "home folder." The terms "folder" and "directory" are generally interchangeable.

A user's short name is also the name of his home directory.

The Finder and the Terminal show different contents for the root directory. Some items in the root directory are made invisible when viewed in the Finder. This reduces visual clutter and enhances simplicity. Users familiar with UNIX-style command line may use the Terminal utility to view everything in a directory.

Installing Wine on Mac OS X

Part 1: Install MacPorts

MacPorts is a package manager that makes installing open source programs much easier. In particular, trying to install a large program like Wine without the help of a package manager would be tremendously difficult. Fortunately, MacPorts itself is simple to install.

On the MacPorts website, go to the Download and Installation page and download the appropriate "dmg" disk image for your computer.
Double-click the file you downloaded, and double-click the .pkg file to run the installer. You're almost done!
Open up the Terminal and copy and paste the following into it. Remember not to include the dollar sign ($) at the beginning.copy all as a one line..

$ echo export PATH=/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:\$PATH$'\n'export MANPATH=/opt/local/man:
 \$MANPATH | sudo tee -a /etc/profile

The Terminal will ask for your password: this is the password to the
Admin account on your computer. As a security measure, the Terminal
does not display anything as you type, not even asterisks (*). Type your password anyway, and press enter. If you ran the command correctly, the Terminal should respond with:

export PATH=/opt/local/bin:/opt/local/sbin:$PATH
export MANPATH=/opt/local/man:$MANPATH

If you didn't get that response, it might be because the Admin account doesn't have a password set. Setting a password is required.
4. Close the Terminal. MacPorts has been installed!

Part 2: Install Wine Using MacPorts

Let's start using MacPorts right away! To tell MacPorts that you want it to install Wine for you, all you have to do is open up the Terminal again and enter this command (without the $):

$ sudo port install wine

You may be asked for your Admin account password again. The Terminal will start displaying lots of information. This is absolutely normal — MacPorts is just keeping you updated on what it's doing. This flow of information will be your guide to let you know whether or not the computer is still working. It will take a while for the install to finish: at least half an hour. As long as the Terminal keeps on giving you more information about what it's doing, don't interrupt it. Feel free to leave and do something else while the computer is installing Wine. When the Terminal stops giving you more information and is ready for another command, Wine is installed and ready to go!

Note: If you get an error message at this step that reads error: C compiler cannot create executables, it usually means you forgot to install Xcode. See the requirements.

Part 3: Install Windows Programs Using Wine

To install a Windows program, first download the installer file: it should end with .exe. Remember the location you put it, and open up the Terminal again. cd to the location, and use ls to make sure you can see the installer file. Once you are in the correct directory, run the installer through Wine by running the following command in the Terminal:

$ wine $INSTALLER.exe

Where $INSTALLER is the name of the installer file. For example, if the installer file is named setup.exe, you would run:

$ wine setup.exe

X11 will open (if it isn't already), and soon you will see a regular graphical Windows installer. Click through it, and you're done!

Part 4: Run Windows Programs Using Wine

Open up the Terminal and run this to get to your Program Files folder:

$ cd ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/

Run ls to see what programs you have installed. Pick a program, and enter its directory using cd. (If the folder has a space in it, you must type a \ before the space. For example, Program\ Files. If you're having problems, try using tab autocomplete.) There should be a file that ends in .exe: this is the program file. Type this into Terminal:

$ wine $PROGRAM.exe

Where $PROGRAM is the name of the .exe file. X11 will open (if it isn't already), and the program will pop up, ready to use! It will probably open fullscreen: to reduce it in size, go open the Window menu from the Mac OS X menu bar, and select Zoom Window. You can then resize the program normally. Enjoy using Windows on your Mac, freely and legally!

Keeping Wine Up to Date

Wine is an open source program. That means that programmers around the world are continually improving it, adding new features and squashing bugs. If you don't update Wine, though, it will never get those improvements, so it's generally a good idea to check for updates every so often. We can use MacPorts to keep Wine up to date: it's easy! Just run this command:

$ sudo port selfupdate && sudo port upgrade outdated

Once again, you will need to enter your Admin account password. With this command, MacPorts will first update itself, if any updates are available. It will then find all the outdated software it knows about (including Wine) and upgrade them all to the latest version. Checking for updates isn't strictly necessary, as Wine runs quite well currently. However, it's a good idea to run this command every few months or so.

Uninstalling Wine and MacPorts

If you try Wine and you don't like it, uninstalling it is easy. Just run this command:

$ sudo port uninstall wine

And MacPorts will helpfully remove Wine from your computer. However, in order to install Wine, MacPorts also had to install many other small programs that Wine relies upon to work correctly. (That's why the install process takes so long!) If you want to remove these as well, it's simplest to just delete your entire MacPorts installation with the following command:

$ sudo rm -rf /opt

That command should remove everything that you installed in this tutorial, including MacPorts, Wine, and all the other programs MacPorts installed to get Wine to work correctly.

So why would you ever use the first of those two commands, rather than the second? Well, MacPorts can install a lot more than just Wine. There are a whole bunch of nifty programs you can easily install using MacPorts, such as GraphViz (a very swanky graphing tool), Battle for Wesnoth (a turn-based strategy game), and GIMP (an image editor, like Adobe Photoshop). And just like Wine, every program available on MacPorts is free and open source. Even if you decide Wine isn't for you, MacPorts might have something else you might like. Take a look!

Check the IP Address

Step 1

Launch the Apple Menu. Select "System Preferences." Then click "Network Control
Things You'll Need:

- Internet connection

Step 2

Check the IP address in the list of connections. Your Mac has an IP address, and some of your electronic devices may also have their own IP addresses.
Step 3

Visit a website such as What Is My IP for a utility that reads your Mac IP address (see Resources below). It will automatically detect your IP address and provide it for you.

Change an IP Address Automatically

Step 1

Obtain a new IP address from your Internet Service Provider or Network Administrator. This step might not be necessary, as most broadband connections use dynamic IP addresses. This means that every time your Mac connects to the Internet, it will be assigned a new IP address. You might not need to do anything in order to change the address.
Step 2

Get the new IP address from your ISP, because if two computers have the same address, neither one of them will be able to connect to the Internet.
Step 3

Realize each computer connecting to the Internet must have its own unique IP address. Have your ISP assign one that nobody else is using or you will waste time trying to guess the right number.

Change Your Mac IP Address Manually

Step 1

Select the network configuration that has the green dot next to it, from the "TCP/IP" screen you opened before. This is your active connection and will probably be the "Built-In-Ethernet" option in the drop-down box. Then click the "Configure" button at the bottom of the dialog box.
Step 2

Click the "Configure IPV4" drop down menu next and choose "Manually."
Step 3

Type in your new IP address in the box under the TCP/IP menu. Simply delete the number that is in there and enter your new one.

Apple’s easy to hack after all?

Apple apparently left off tools that are available in the GNU compiler collection to protect against exactly this sort of attack. Dai Zovi even says that the current version of OS X is easier to hack than XP. Ouch.

Does this mean that Mac’s are less secure than PC’s? Not really, since they’re still such a small percentage of the market that they’re not under heavy attack by malware. Even though the capability exists to take advantage of this vulnverability, the return on time and effort is still a lot better on the Windows side for malware writers. Of course, someone could always decide that Macs are an underutilized target for malware and create something interesting.

Tracking the source of DOS attack with Cisco IOS

Problem: Enterprise is under Denial Of Service Attack that brings down key elements of the business or the whole network at all.
To track the attacker is the first step in handling the attack and unless the flood is coming from inside (most probably not in a well managed LAN) you will need help of your Service Provider to find out the origin. Unfortunately Service Provider’s (SP) backbone is not well suited for such forensics, as its business role is
to provide uninterrupted connectivity to ALL the clients , not only you, so SP will not enable ACLs/ip accounting/Netflow on their backbone to identify where the attack is coming from . And if source Ip of the attack is spoofed you can’t do much .

For such cases Cisco came with the nice feature called
ip source tracking that will gather flow statistics for specific destination
IPs (of victim) and periodically will export them for viewing, and will do all this without overloading the backbone router it is enabled on (Of course relevant if your SP is using Cisco gear) . Here are details:

– Enable it globally for the victim IP , here IP being attacked is 63.45.33.22

Edge(config)#ip source-track 63.45.33.22

- If you want (and if this is being done by SP they will not) you may create log entries:

Then you will see in logs (good for reminding to disable this afterwards) :

Most important here will be the Source interface (in this router there is only 1 ingress interface , in real backbone you will have few feeds) where you see most of the incoming traffic for this destination IP. Then you (SP) would go to the upstream router connected to this local interface, enable the same source tracking and so on. Up to the last point in the backbone where the attacking traffic enters
the backbone of SP out of some upstream SP . Then SP would have option to contact the abuse of this upstream provider for them to investigate the issue further, or at least divert the attack to the black hole at the entry point, so end client would not be affected at all.

Ten tweaks that will improve Nokia N95 battery life by 328%

here is no way getting around the fact battery life on the Nokia N95 is less than great. Almost every N95 review addresses this issue in one way or the other. Opinions seem to range from infuriated "Nokia should provide a more powerful battery for this type of device" to apologetic "a communication and multi media power house is bound to run its battery dry in no time".

Whatever the case may be, there are things that can be done to improve upon the «default» N95 battery life time. Improvements come from tweaking a few, selected settings from their default values.

I have divided this authoritative N95 battery tweaking guide into two parts: first I will show you a few basic battery friendly optimizations and habits that can be employed by everyone. Next, I provide a few advanced tweaks that on the one hand might not fit everybody, on the other hand result in the most significant improvements.

Right, let's get cracking!

Basic Optimizations

Update phone firmware - new firmware might include improvements to battery management.
Bluetooth - keep it off unless needed. Put bluetooth management on «active standby» screen for easy access («Tools» | «Settings» | «General» | «Personalisation» | «Standby mode» | «Active standby apps..»).
Brightness timeout …not more than 10 seconds («Tools» | «Settings» | «General» | «Personalisation» | «Display» | «Light time-out»).
Screen brightness - turn it down a notch or two («Tools» | «Settings» | «General» | «Personalisation» | «Display» | «Light sensor»).
Lower the standby timeout - mine's set to 1 minute («Tools» | «Settings» | «General» | «Personalisation» | «Display» | «Power saver time-out»).
Camera - do not walk around with "live" viewfinder¹.

Rocket Science Tweaks

WLAN scanning - turn it off…scan manually, or turn scanning on when needed («Tools» | «Settings» | «Connection» | «Wireless LAN» | «Scan for networks»).
3G - turn it off - especially in areas with poor coverage, where the N95 otherwise will spend stupefying amounts of power searching for networks («Tools» | «Settings» | «Phone» | «Network» | Set «Network mode» to «GSM»).
WLAN transmit power (TX power level) - turn it down to, say, 4 mW. («Tools» | «Settings» | «Connection» | «Wireless LAN» | «Options» | «Advanced settings» - say YES to the prompt - scroll down to TX power level choose options/change/ and select 4 mW.).
10th tweak - it simply amounts to switching the phone into »offline« mode at night. In the »offline« mode, the cellular network connectivity is off (but WLAN and Bluetooth are still available) and the rationale is that since you do not make calls while you are sleeping, you might as well let the battery get some rest too.

Enjoy … and by the way, I have no idea if employing these tweaks will actually lead to a 328% improvement, but it is a nice figure, don't you think?

Yesterday I found out that Mobitel (Sri Lanka) don’t have their GPRS/MMS settings online like Dialog GSM. Even Google couldn’t find them for me! After a little bit of searching online, I finally gave in and called Mobitel’s customer support. After listening to a few songs and a recording that kept reminding that the call was valuable to them and will be attended to soon, I was finally able to get the settings from them. So to save you the pain here they are:

Viewing Email Header

Every e-mail comes with information attached to it that tells the recipient of its history. This information called a header. The below is the Full header of email .All this information comes with the email. The header contains the information essential to tracing an e-mail. The main components to look for in the header are the lines beginning with "From:" and "Received:" However, it might be instructive to look at what various different lines in the header mean.

Some e-mail programs, like Yahoo or Hotmail, have their full headers hidden by default In order to view the full header, you must specifically turn on that option. Some ways of doing this in different e-mail programs follow here:

X- headers are user defined headers. They are inserted by email client programs or applications that use email. Here from the X- headers inserted into the email by the email client it is clear that the sender has used Microsoft Outlook Express 6.00.2800.1106 to send this email.

MIME-Version:

MIME stands for Multipurpose Internet Mail Extension. It tells the recipient what types of attachments are included in email. It is a format that allows people to send attachments that do not contain Standard English Words, but rather graphics, sounds, and e-mails written with other characters. The Mime-Version field merely confirms that the version of MIME used corresponds to the standard version (which is currently 1.0).

From:

Form is useless in tracing an e-mail. It consists of the email of the sender but this can be obviously be a fake. One can use any fake-mailer to fake the sender's name.

Content-Type:

This line tells the receiving e-mail client exactly what MIME type or types are included in the e-mail message. If the Content–Type is text/plain; charset="us-ascii" just tells us that the message contains a regular text message that uses English characters. ASCII is the American Standard Code for Information Interchange and is the system used to convert numbers to English characters.

Return-Path:

It is the address to which your return e-mail will be sent. Different e-mail programs use other variations of Return-Path:. These might include Return-Errors-To: or Reply-To etc.

Received:

This field is the key to find out the source of any e-mail. Like a regular letter, e-mails gets postmarked with information that tells where it has been. However, unlike a regular letter, an e-mail might get "postmarked" any number of times as it makes its way from its source through a number of mail transfer agents (MTAs). The MTAs are responsible for properly routing messages to their destination.

Let me strip-off the above email header to make the understanding easy. The header is splitted and the two received headers are given below.

The MTAs are "stamped" on the e-mail's header so that the most recent MTA is listed on the top of the header and the first MTA through which the e-mail has passed in listed on the bottom of the header. In the above sample e-mail header, e-mail first passed through 68.37.24.150 (pcp03530790pcs.mnhwkn01.nj.comcast.net), and at last made its way through 204.127.198.35 (rwcrmhc11.comcast.net).

In the Received Header 2, the one marked as "pavilion" is either the domain name of the server from which the email has originated or the name of the computer from which the email has been sent. By doing a DNS query for "pavilion", it is confirmed that it is not a know host name hence, must be the name of the computer from which the mail has originated. "68.37.24.150" is the IP address from which the mail might have originated or it is the IP address of the ISP (Internet Service Provider) to which the user was logged on while sending the mail.

Trace who owns the IP address
Every computers hooked on to internet is assigned with an IP address. Individual users possess a dynamic IP address when they logged on to any ISP to access internet. These IP addresses are assigned by the ISP itself. Organization usually possess static/public IP address which is stored in a database of registries.

There are three major registries covering different parts of the world. They are

www.arin.net => American Registry of Internet Numbers (ARIN) : It assigns IP addresses for the Americas and for sub Saharan Africa.

www.apnic.net => Asia Pacific Network Information Centre (APNIC) : It covers Asia

www.ripe.net => Réseaux IP Européens (RIPE NCC) : It covers Europe

Thus, to find out which organization owns a particular IP address, you can make a "WHOIS" query in the database at any of these registries. You do this by typing the IP address into the "WHOIS" box that appears on each of these websites.

"Received Header" will have the IP address of the ISP in case the users has dialed up to the ISP while sending the email. But if the user has send the email from within the corporate then the corporate public/static IP address is logged.

By giving a "WHOIS" query for 68.37.24.150 at www.arin.net, the following result has been displayed:

Now since the IP address found belongs to an ISP, it is clear that the sender has dialed up to this ISP while sending the email. For further enquiry we can then request the ISP to provide us with details of the user who has dialed up to them at that given point of time (Wed, 26 Nov 2003 03:44:57 +0000). If the ISP cooperates, they will check their user and message logs to see who was logged into that particular IP address at that time and date. This will reveals the sender's telephone number from which he/she has dialed to the ISP. Now once we have the telephone number we can easily retrieve the name and address of the sender.

Now the above case is solved but there are also other cases where the IP address found on the email header may be owned by an organisation or a cyber cafe.

Cases1: THE IP ADDRESS OWNED BY AN ORGANISATION

But in case the IP address found belongs to an organisation then you have to request them to provide information about the user who has send the mail from within the organisation network. They must have user and message logs on their firewall / proxy and can trace each of their computers connected at the given point of time. By supplying the organisation with the e-mail header of the offending e-mail, they can check these logs and hopefully produce information of the user of that machine.

Cases2: THE IP ADDRESS OWNED BY A CYBER-CAFE

In case it is found that the sender has sent the email from a cyber-cafe then it becomes a difficult task to trace him/her. The user may not be a frequent visitor to that cyber-cafe. But let's assume that you receive such mails frequently from that particular cyber-cafe then you can install "key-loggers" in the computers at the cafe. These programs records user's keystrokes, thus creating a record of everything that was typed at a particular terminal. By reviewing the key-logger logs you may be able to trace the sender in this case.

Note: These methods would aid greatly in identifying an e-mail sender, they also would impinge on the rights of others using the computers to conduct their personal business. Such a conflict defines the ongoing struggle between the fight against terrorism over the Internet and the right to privacy, which will continue to evolve in the years ahead.

If you have ever tried to download several things simultaneously through IE then you may have noticed that it doesn't work quite the way you may have hoped it to. This is because IE limits the amount of simultaneous downloads to two. This is done so that the perceived download progress appears to be tolerable. If you have a high speed connection then your browser should be able to handle a few more downloads. Here is 2 different steps I found to increase your number of connections. Have fun!

And yet, the security awareness of the owners of laptops is somewhat lacking. So here are 5 simple rules that can help you keep your laptop safe:

Do not leave a laptop unattended in areas accessible by the general public - Leaving a laptop anywhere where it can be seen and picked up by another person is a very bad idea. This includes the table in your favorite cafe, the company cafeteria, airport lounge or waiting room, even an unlocked office where there is a possibility for an untrusted person to walk in.
If you must leave your laptop, secure it - In the unlikely case where you must leave your laptop, make sure it is very difficult for someone to steal it. Either place it in a cabinet (preferably locked) or use a Kensington Lock to bind your laptop to something difficult to move (office furniture, central heating pipes).
Carry your laptop in an inconspicuous bag - Avoid manufacturer branded laptop cases, since they scream "there is a laptop in here". Simply, invest $30-$40 in a simple unmarked document bag which has a laptop compartment. NOTE:DO NOT go overboard and buy a designer bag costing as much as the laptop, since then the bag itself will be a target for theft.
Do not leave a laptop in a visible place in your car - A lot of petty criminals can see an excellent opportunity to steal any kind of bag left on a seat of a parked vehicle. Ideally, never leave your laptop in the car. If it must be left, place it in the trunk of the car, and check that you have locked the car and fully closed all windows.
Encrypt the entire hard drive - if all else fails, the value of the information within the laptop is usually much greater then the value of the hardware. Encrypting the entire hard drive will make much more difficult for the thief to extract the valuable information, and can prolong the extraction time to a point when the extracted information will be useless. Encrypting the entire hard drive will cause performance reduction of the disk subsystem, but this is always acceptable when compared to the protection it offers, even for home users. There are several products which can perform full drive encryption like Windows Vista BitLocker, a free TrueCrypt software, and several commercial add-on packages. NOTE: Do not try encrypting only part of the hard drive or certain files. This will not add too much security, since the attacker has an entire computer full of data to search for clues to your decryption password.

By tweaking the way Firefox handles some caching functions, you can dramatically improve page load speed and even prevent Firefox from hogging your system resources while minimized. Just follow the simple instructions, take your time and if you want a security blanket to squeeze, jot down each setting before you change it so you can always restore the default configuration if need be. Reduce the amount of RAM Firefox uses for its cache feature

1. Type “about:config” (no quotes) in the adress bar in the browser.
2. Find “browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewer”
3. Set it’s value to “0“;(Zero)

Increase the Speed at Which Firefox loads pages

1. Type “about:config” into the address bar and hit Enter.
(Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.)

2. Alter the entries as follows:
Set “network.http.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.proxy.pipelining” to “true”
Set “network.http.pipelining.maxrequests” to some number like 10.

This means it will make 10 requests at once.

3. Lastly, right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it “nglayout.initialpaint.delay” and set its value to “0“;.(Zero)

This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives. If you’re using a broadband connection you’ll load pages faster now.
Optionally (for even faster web browsing) here are some more options for your about:config (you might have to create some of these entries by Right Click –> New– > Interger or String

network.dns.disableIPv6: set “false”
“content.notify.backoffcount”: set “5“; (Five)
“plugin.expose_full_path”: set “true”.

Reduce RAM usage to 10MB when Firefox is minimized:

This little hack will drop Firefox’s RAM usage down to 10 Mb when minimized:

1. Open Firefox and go to the Address Bar. Type in about:config and then press Enter.
2. Right Click in the page and select New -> Boolean.
3. In the box that pops up enter “config.trim_on_minimize”. Press Enter.
4. Now select True and then press Enter.
5. Restart Firefox.

The "Undervolting" Guide

What is Undervolting?

Undervolting is a process which reduces the excess "voltage" given to the CPU using a software. This is widely used as a cooling solution and in my opinion more effective than any other cooling solution available (thermal paste, cooling pad, etc) at NO cost. Results can vary from 5c up to 30c drop in temperature, most will achieve an average of 10c.

Undervolting will NOT compromise performance at all. Underclocking and Overclocking (clock speeds) is whats responsible in regards to performance. Benchmarks will also prove that performance remains the same. Most beginners usually think and assume undervolting will sacrifice performance but they are wrong.

So you’re probably wondering how this works out and why Intel/AMD didn’t do this before hand..WHY? HOW?

Not all processor chips are built equally. Each individual processor have different voltage tolerances. Instead of Intel tuning each chip's voltage individually for the lowest voltage possible and risking instability, they made a fully stable standard voltage for all chips to run on. The problem is this standard factory voltage they put is quite high. Undervolting takes advantage of this by reducing it to the right amount.

This is also why some people can undervolt more than others even with the exact same model processor. It’s like the same concept for overclocking, some can go higher, some cant. Unlike overclocking, Undervolting will not void your warranty or damage your hardware.

Bottom line is.. There is no catch to undervolting.

1)***Checking Max temps before Undervolt***

Firstly, We need to find out how hot your CPU gets when under load to compare what undervolting can achieve.

i) Open HWmonitor. It will show the CPU/GPU/HDD's maximum, minimum and current temps. Today we are only going to be looking at the CPU core temps. I recommend using HWmonitor because its one of the best temp programs and its accurate but others will work too.

ii) Run ORTHOS CPU Loader. This handy program will simulate full cpu load for both cores.

iii) Click on the Start button and let it run for 10mins. Watch the temps shoot up to about 70-90c.

iv) Once its done stressing the CPU for 10mins, stop the program and record the maximum temp.

-I managed to get a scorching temperature of 79c.

2) ***Installing and setting up RMclock***

Note: Vista x64 users will need to download the signed 64bit drivers down below to make RMclock work.

i) Unzip/Install RMclock into your notebook

ii) Run RMclock

iii) Click on the "Advanced CPU Settings" tab. The latest version of RMclock should automatically detect your CPU. If it doesn’t then click on the "Mobile" radio button near the bottom and tick "Apply these settings at startup". Now hit the Apply button

*AMD users need to tick P-State Transistors for a better undervolt

If it asks you to restart the program, do so. After it has restarted go to the "CPU info" tab. Double check its showing the correct processor you have. On this page you will also see alot of digits moving up and down about your CPU.

3)***Setting up Profile***

i) Double click on the Profile tab then click on "Performance on Demand" sub-profile.

- Tick "Use P-State Transitions" for both AC Power and Battery
- Tick all the index boxes possible, Make sure to scroll down and click the others
- Click Apply when all done.

Now we head back to the Main Profile page....

ii) Change the current profile in the drop down box to "Performance on Demand" for both AC Power and Battery

-Make sure all the index boxes are ticked. If you have SuperLFM or IDA i suggest leaving this out for the meantime. See down below later on for what these features do.

iii) Untick "Auto Adjust intermediate-states VID" near the bottom and hit the Default button. Your factory voltages should now show up. Click Apply.

4) ***Undervolting***

In the main profile page, you will see different multipliers and voltages. What are multipliers?

Multipliers are incorporated with Intel SpeedStep Technology (see down below for full definition). Instead of the CPU running at full power all the time, multipliers are used to dynamically lower the clock speeds to make the CPU run more efficiently.

The more CPU power you need, the higher the multiplier your CPU will use. The higher the multiplier, the higher the corresponding clock speed will be. The higher the clockspeed, the more voltage it requires to run (vice versa)

i) First, We are going to start lowering the highest multiplier's voltage which is the 11x multiplier for me.

-Most people should be able to lower it by at least .100v to begin with the initial testing then slowly decreasing it from there on

ii) Always click Apply so the new voltage can take effect then do the stability test below. Keep doing this everytime you lower the voltage

5) ***Testing Stability*** (make sure all work is saved!)

i) Open ORTHOS and HWMonitor again. (we will now see how much cooler it is)
ii) Go to the "CPU info" tab of RMclock (you can also watch the temps and stats here).
iii) Set the test type to "Small FFTs - stress cpu" to concentrate the test to the cpu.
iv) Run ORTHOS stress test for 45mins or more

- If it doesn’t crash when the stability test is done then you can go lower. I suggest lowering by .025v at a time till it BSOD or gives a warning error.

*If you get a bluescreen - then you have reached your limit and the voltage is too low. Once it restarts from the BSOD, it should revert to the last stable voltages. Keep a record of the good/bad voltages on paper.

*If you get a warning or hardware error from ORTHOS - Your voltage is also too low. Raise your voltage and try again.

-Once you have found your unstable voltage, i suggest raising the voltage up by 2 steps. This will put a safe margin away from your unstable voltage to ensure stability

**Its normal to get a BSOD or error at some point so dont freak out. It wont do any hardware damage.

**Most people are able to achieve .150v to .250v less than their default voltages for the highest multiplier. Again, it all depends on your processors tolerances.

6) ***Results***
After several changes and stability tests i was able to lower it to 1.100v that’s .150 volts less than my standard voltage (1.250v). My undervolt isn’t as great compared to how low others can achieve but it has made a significant difference.

My max temps before undervolting was a scorching 79c now it is only 67c! That’s a big 12c shaved off at the cost of nothing.

I cannot accurately calculate how much extra battery life this will give cause of too many variables. I can only estimate about 15-25mins by perception as i havent got proper benchmarking programs and monitors. From what other users have posted, they saw an average of 10watt difference which should reduce the strain on your hot power adapters.

When you have found your optimum voltage settings, I suggest doing a further 3 hour stress test (when you have spare time) to make sure it is 100% stable.

Once you have made sure this voltage stable, you can now choose to make these settings run at startup:

Go to the Main Profile page > On the drop down box for startup choose "Performance on Demand" > Hit Apply

Now go to Settings page > Tick "Start Minimized in Windows Tray" and "Run at windows startup" > Hit Apply

To show your CPU temps in the Taskbar/System Tray > Right click the RMclock wheel icon and click "Show CPU Temperature"

Why is it a scam?

The Truth

The truth is, these scams works by fooling you into giving out your own password blindly, one of the requirement set out by these hackers is the sending of your own user name and password to an account that the scammer owns. Usually it has a very suspicious name to it, for example recoverpassword@hotmail.com (example) or adminpasswordrecovery@yahoo.com (example). How does it work?

These hackers claimed that there is a bug in the Hotmail, Gmail or Yahoo mail system and by emailing your user name, your password and your spouse’s /friend’s /enemy’s email address to the designated email address, a reply together with the requested password would arrive in your inbox within a day or two. Truth is, you’ve been conned into giving out your password, thus allowing the hacker unrestricted access into your email account.

The bottom line is, never reveal your password to a stranger, not even Microsoft’s hotmail team members, and your password can be retrieved with the ‘lost password’ feature in hotmail or any other email system.

Is there another way, say some soft of Brute Force hacking software?

You’ve been warned again, there are no such things as Brute Force hacking for emails. Brute Force hacking doesn’t work in any internet application, it’s like flooding the server with million of request per minute, common sense would tell you that if a server spot a DOS attack, it would block the IP address immediately, as a general rule of thumb, NEVER do anything a “hacker” tells you to do.

How I achieve this
I developed a java program, that help us to automatically telnet router or switch and get details from it. Basically it need to maintain the xml file. Because it need to store our routers or switches user name and password. So that why I make xml file for that.
There I give you 2 jar files and one xml file. Before you need java platform. Then you copy sshfactory.jar file to your java bin file and another jar file is my one.It's Network-Hack.jar file. You can run this file in your desktop. After you run that jar file you can see text file with their ip address . This I recommend for only cisco devise. I didn't check for other products. idle.php - This is set in the 7961G's configuration file to auto load as the idle screen after the phone is idle for 2 minutes. Basically it just tells the phone to download and display a dynamically generated PNG file.

createpng.php - this script given the 'lc' variable (WeatherZone's Location) will generate the current temp, and two day forecast. I know it's not the most efficient coding - but I am only a casual coder!
Note that I use a font I donwloaded for the big temp text which you can get here: Arial-72.gdf
I don't bother caching the generated image as I only use this service on a single phone - obviously would be worthwile if there were more than the 1 phone uitlisting the service!

Configuring your feeds

The first step is to actually download the perl script(download link here link), but if you can't figure that out without a tutorial then this is probably the wrong task for you. Once you have the script downloaded, open it up in the text editor of your choice. Do note that because it uses unix line breaks, Notepad on windows is NOT a good choice. Wordpad, however, will display it fine. As will any application on Linux or BSD/OSX.

Look for the line "ATTENTION: EDIT THE FOLLOWING VARIABLES" and go to the $pathto line below it. Do not disturb or change any other characters on this line and inside the single quotes put the location your script will end up at. Such as: 'http://blog.ginc.co.cc/phone_services' Do NOT put a slash at the end of this line as the script will automatically add one later.

Below that line is where we enter the RSS feeds we want. RSS feed configurations are 2 lines per RSS feed. One line is for the title/description, the other is for the URL that the feed is located at. Copy one of the example feeds and replace everything inside the single quotes on the @descriptions line with the name of the feed. Visit a website you enjoy and find their RSS icon or link. Take the URL to the feed and place it inside the single quotes of the @feeds line, replacing the existing feed URL. Do this as many times as you want, however Cisco IP phones have a limit of 64 menu items, so you can't exceed that.

That completes all the changes you need to make inside the script. Please do not change anything else unless you know what you are doing. Even changing by accident a single character will cause the script to fail and you'll have to start over again. Be mindful of your editing!

Save your changes to the file, rename it to cisco.pl and move along to the next step.

Windows with IIS Specific Instructions

These directions are for users who are running Windows server 2000 or 2003 with Microsoft's IIS web server. Please skip them if this is not your configuration.

Install IIS using Add/Remove Programs if not already installed. (This is left as an exercise for the reader)
Download and install the Win32 version of ActivePerl from ActiveState
Click the Start button, go to All Programs, then ActiveState ActivePerl. Click "Perl Package Manager".
In the console window type exactly: install XML-RSS
When the install is complete, type: exit
Open the IIS management console and connect to the web server
Click on "Web Service Extensions" and ALLOW "Perl CGI Extension" and "Perl ISAPI Extension"
Right click on your website (probably "Default Web Site") and click "Properties". Click the "Home Directory" tab.
Make sure "Execute Permissions" is set to "Scripts and Executables".
Click the "Configuration" button and make sure the extension .pl is in the list.
Copy cisco.pl to your website's home folder. (probably C:\inetpub\wwwroot\)

Open Internet Explorer and go to URL that your script now lives at. ie: http://myserver.net/phone/cisco.pl If you see something that looks like this:

You have completed the configuration sucessfully! If you see an error or the text of the script itself, then something went wrong and you should start over.

Linux/BSD/OSX/etc with Apache Specific Instructions

These directions are for users who are running Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, or OSX with the Apache web server. Please skip them if this is not your configuration.

Install and configure Apache with mod_perl. This is done at install on almost all linux distros, however: (This is left as an exercise for the reader)
(NOTE: This step must be performed as a super user, such as root) At a shell prompt type: perl -e shell -MCPAN
In the CPAN perl shell, type: install XML::RSS
If you see any prompts about prepending dependant modules answer Yes
When the install is complete type: exit
Copy/Upload cisco.pl to the folder of your choice in your web server's public folder. Remember to place it in a suitable location for CGI execution
Note that you may need to rename the file to .cgi if your Apache configuration requires this for execution of CGI scripts.
Ensure that the proper executable permissions are set for rss2cisco.pl

Open Mozilla Firefox and go to URL that your script now lives at. ie: http://myserver.net/phone/rss2cisco.pl If you see something that looks like this:

Setting up the Phone Service in Call Manager

Here's where we log into Call Manager's web admin interface and set up the phone service, then apply it to phones. If you don't know how to get into your Call Manager server's web interface what the hell are you doing here?

Log into call manager and click the "Feature" menu, then click "Cisco IP Phone Services"
Click "Add a New Phone Service" (it's a small link in the upper right hand side of the page)
Enter following...
Service Name: cisco
Service Description: RSS Feeds for your Cisco IP Phone
In the Service URL textbox enter the URL to your script, specifically, the address you used to test it in a web browser in the last step.
Click Insert

Now the phone service is set up and availble in your Call Manager server. To apply the service to individual phones do the following.

Click "Device", then click "Phone"
Using the search, find a phone and display it.
Click the "Subscribe/Unsubscribe Services" link in the upper right corner.
Select "rss2cisco" from the drop down list and click "Continue"
Click "Subscribe"
Reset the phone to apply the changes.

Conclusion

Now that all your steps are done you should be able to go to your phone, load the service, and display RSS feeds. If not then something has gone wrong and you should review the steps and start again from scratch, checking all your work as you go.

After the tremendously successful 2000 and 2003 security tools surveys, Insecure.Org is delighted to release this 2006 survey. I (Fyodor) asked users from the nmap-hackers mailing list to share their favorite tools, and 3,243 people responded. This allowed me to expand the list to 100 tools, and even subdivide them into categories. Anyone in the security field would be well advised to go over the list and investigate tools they are unfamiliar with. I discovered several powerful new tools this way. I also point newbies to this site whenever they write me saying “I don't know where to start”.

Respondents were allowed to list open source or commercial tools on any platform. Commercial tools are noted as such in the list below. No votes for the Nmap Security Scanner were counted because the survey was taken on a Nmap mailing list. Understanding what the IEEE 802.1x standard is and why you should care means understanding three separate concepts: PPP, EAP and 802.1x itself.

Most people are familiar with PPP - Point-to-Point Protocol. PPP is most commonly used for dial-up Internet access. PPP is also used by some ISPs for DSL and cable modem authentication, in the form of PPP over Ethernet. PPP is part of Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol, a core part of Microsoft's secure remote access solution for Windows 2000 and beyond.

PPP evolved beyond its original use as a dial-up access method and iis now used all over the Internet. One piece of PPP defines an authentication mechanism. With dial-up Internet access, that's the username and password you're used to using. PPP authentication is used to identify the user at the other end of the PPP line before giving them access.

Most enterprises want to do more for security than simply employing usernames and passwords for access, so a new authentication protocol, called the Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP), was designed. EAP sits inside of PPP's authentication protocol and provides a generalized framework for several different authentication methods. EAP is supposed to head off proprietary authentication systems and let everything from passwords to challenge-response tokens and public-key infrastructure certificates all work smoothly.

With a standardized EAP, interoperability and compatibility of authentication methods becomes simpler. For example, when you dial a remote-access server and use EAP as part of your PPP connection, the RAS doesn't need to know any of the details about your authentication system. Only you and the authentication server have to be coordinated. By supporting EAP authentication a RAS server gets out of the business of acting as middle man, and just packages and repackages EAP packets to hand off to a RADIUS server that will do the actual authentication.

This brings us to the IEEE 802.1x standard, which is simply a standard for passing EAP over a wired or wireless LAN. With 802.1x, you package EAP messages in Ethernet frames and don't use PPP. It's authentication and nothing more. That's desirable in situations in which the rest of PPP isn't needed, where you're using protocols other than TCP/IP, or where the overhead and complexity of using PPP is undesirable.

802.1x uses three terms that you need to know. The user or client that wants to be authenticated is called a supplicant. The actual server doing the authentication, typically a RADIUS server, is called the authentication server. And the device in between, such as a wireless access point, is called the authenticator. One of the key points of 802.1x is that the authenticator can be simple and dumb - all of the brains have to be in the supplicant and the authentication server. This makes 802.1x ideal for wireless access points, which are typically small and have little memory and processing power.

The protocol in 802.1x is called EAP encapsulation over LANs (EAPOL). It is currently defined for Ethernet-like LANs including 802.11 wireless, as well as token ring LANs such as FDDI. EAPOL is not particularly sophisticated. There are a number of modes of operation, but the most common case would look something like this:

The authenticator sends an "EAP-Request/Identity" packet to the supplicant as soon as it detects that the link is active (e.g., the supplicant system has associated with the access point).

1. The supplicant sends an "EAP-Response/Identity" packet to the authenticator, which is then passed on to the authentication (RADIUS) server.
2. The authentication server sends back a challenge to the authenticator, such as with a token password system. The authenticator unpacks this from IP and repackages it into EAPOL and sends it to the supplicant. Different authentication methods will vary this message and the total number of messages. EAP supports client-only authentication and strong mutual authentication. Only strong mutual authentication is considered appropriate for the wireless case.
3. The supplicant responds to the challenge via the authenticator and passes the response onto the authentication server.
4. If the supplicant provides proper identity, the authentication server responds with a success message, which is then passed onto the supplicant. The authenticator now allows access to the LAN- - possibly restricted based on attributes that came back from the authentication server. For example, the authenticator might switch the supplicant to a particular virtual LAN or install a set of firewall rules.

Down and dirty with Wireless LAN security
The 3-year-old Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP) protocol has been discredited so thoroughly that its authentication and encryption capabilities are not considered sufficient for use in enterprise networks. In response to the WEP fiasco, many wireless LAN vendors have latched onto IEEE 802.1x standard to help authenticate and secure both wireless and wired LANs. The wildcard with 802.1x protocol is interoperability.a particular virtual LAN or install a set of firewall rules.

Adjust Graphics for Speed

Windows XP has a lot of new cool looking visual elements, however, those new elements take up more RAM and cause your computer to be less responsive. By tweaking your graphics settings, you can increase the performance of your computer.

To get started, Let’s reduce the color quality. This setting determines how many colors are displayed on your screen.

1. Right click on your desktop and select properties.

2. Click on the settings tab and adjust the color quality drop down box to Medium (16 Bit).

3. Click OK.

Next, let’s use the windows performance settings to optimize your computer for performance. This will revert back to the old Windows 2000 look as well as take away a lot of the fancy graphics effects. However, if you are really into performance, this is the price you have to pay.

Automatic Screen Refresh

Fire up the Registry Editor and navigate to the following key:

By default, the value is 400.

Change this to a smaller value, such as 0, to speed it up.

Restarting Windows Without Restarting Your PC

A modern PC with Vista Home Edition takes about one and a half minutes to boot. An older machine with XP is about the same. That’s 30 seconds for the PC itself (the BIOS) to boot up, plus a minute for the Windows operating system to boot.

Sometimes, you need to reboot Windows (e.g. when installing new software), but there is no need to restart BIOS, too. However, the default is to reboot both. (That’s called doing a “cold boot,” rather than a “warm boot.”) There’s a trick that works on both XP and Vista to get it to do a warm boot instead, thus saving you 30 seconds per cycle.

The trick is to hold down the SHIFT key when invoking the restart.

Windows Vista: Select Start, then hover over the right arrow that is to the right of the padlock icon until the pop-up menu appears that contains “restart” as one of it’s choices. Hold down the SHIFT key while clicking on the “restart” choice.

Windows XP: Select Start. Select “Shut Down…”. Change the drop-down combo box under “What do you want the computer to do?” to “Restart”. Hold down the SHIFT key while clicking on the “OK” button.

Enable Administrator at Welcome Screen

Now head up to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\Userlist

create a new DWORD entry and name it as Administrator and change its value to 1.

exit and reboot for the changes to take effect.

To change it back change its value to 0 or simply delete the key

Change your Windows XP Boot Screen

This is a very simple trick to do if you have done the same for the logon screen and the start button. There are 2 ways to do this trick that I know about one is doing it manually and the other is using a program called bootxp. I am going to tell you the manual way to do it, but if you want to know the other way just let me know, so I can do an update to the guide. Now once you have downloaded your ntoskrnl.exe file save it a general location so that you will have easy access to it, like my folder.

Once you have ntoskrnl.exe file in an easy access folder, restart your pc into safe mode. Once into safe mode go to the folder where your files are located.

Now that you are there copy the file that you want to change your boot screen too. Once you have copied that file, hit the window key + r or type %windir%\system32 in the run command, so that folder as follows.

Once there paste your new file into the folder and overwrite the existing folder.

Now that you have your new file in the folder restart your pc as you normally would and your new boot screen should appear. You can download this bootscreen here.

Remove the Read-Only option. Next, open it in Notepad or any other text editor. Finally, go to the text 'Options' within the file and make the following changes: Add BootDelay=0. To make your booting even faster, set add Logo=0 to remove the Windows logo at startup.

5. Restart only Windows: When restarting your PC, hold down Shift to only restart Windows rather than the whole system which will only take a fraction of the time.

6. Turn Off Animations: Go to Display Settings from the Control Panel and switch to the Effects Tab. Now turn off Show Windows Content While Dragging and Smooth Edges on Screen Fonts. This tip is also helpful with Windows XP because of the various fade/scroll effects.

7. Faster Start-Menu Access: Go to the Start menu and select Run. Now type Regedit and hit Enter. The Registry Editor will appear on the screen. Now, open the folder HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop. You should see a MenuShowDelay value. If you don't then do the following: right click on a blank space in the right pane and select New\String. Change the name in the new value to MenuShowDelay. Now that we have the MenuShowDelay value, double click on it and enter 0 in the value data field. This sets the start menu delay to 0 milliseconds.

8. Resolutions: If you are willing to do anything for faster performance from your PC, then try lowering your display resolution. The lower it is, the faster your PC.

9. Turn off Active Desktop: Go to your Display Properties and switch to the Web tab. Uncheck View My Active Desktop As a Web Page. Since the Active Desktop option under Windows 98 uses a lot of system resources, this option can have a dramatic effect on the speed of the whole system.

10. Defragment Often: Windows 98's Defrag tool uses Application Acceleration from Intel which means that when you defragment your drive, data is physically arranged on the drive so that applications will load faster.

How to configure DHCP server on Cisco Routers and switches with Cisco IOS

DHCP, Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol is the protocol used by network devices like a PC or a printer (DHCP clients) to obtain IP Address, Default Gateway, Domain Name, DNS Servers, NetBIOS servers and more that helps the device to work properly in an IP Network.

While in an ideal scenario, most if not all organisations run the DHCP server on a Windows server or a Linux/Unix server. While this is justfiable in bigger corporate and enterprise networks, a smaller network like a branch office can be supported by a local Router, Switch or a Firewall can run a DHCP server without the need of an additional server hardware to run DHCP. Most of the routers, firewalls and some switches do have a DHCP server builtin. Most of the new Cisco Routers and Switches running Cisco IOS can run a DHCP server.

The following procedure helps you to setup a Cisco Router or a Catalyst Switch as DHCP server (I use a Cisco Router here):

Enable DHCP Service on the Router

dhcp-router# conf t

dhcp-router(config)# service dhcp

Create DHCP IP Pool

dhcp-router(config)# ip dhcp pool IP-POOL

where IP-POOL is the name of the DHCP IP Pool

Add Network & subnet mask to the DHCP Pool

Add Default Gateway for the clients

Specify the Domain Name for the clients

How setup da MRTG 2.16.2 to Windows

To get MRTG to work on Windows you need the following:

A current copy of Perl. For Example ActivePerl 5.8.8 from ActiveState http://www.activestate.com/store/activeperl/download/
The latest version of MRTG from http://oss.oetiker.ch/mrtg/pub. Look for mrtg-2.16.2.zip or better. The archive also contains a precompiled copy of rateup.exe for Win32.

First: Unzip MRTG to C:\mrtg-2.16.2 on the Windows machine of your choice.

Next

Install Perl on the same Windows machine. You might want to make sure that the Perl binary directory is listed in your system path.

 C:\Perl\bin;%SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;...

To see if everything is installed properly you can open a Command Shell and go into c:\mrtg-2.16.2\bin. Type:

perl mrtg

CONFIGURING MRTG

Now it is time to create a configuration for MRTG. But before we begin you need to know a few things. Take an opportunity to gather the following information:

The IP address or hostname and the SNMP port number, (if non standard), of the device you want to monitor.
If you want to monitor something other than bytes in and out, you must also know the SNMPOID of what you want to monitor.
Finally you need to know the read-only SNMP community string for your device. If you don't know it, try public, that is the default.

The first thing we do in setting up MRTG is making a default config file. Get to a cmd prompt and change to the c:\mrtg-2.16.2\bin directory. Type the following command:

 perl cfgmaker public@10.10.10.1 --global "WorkDir: c:\www\mrtg" --output mrtg.cfg

This creates an initial MRTG config file for you. Note that in this file all interfaces of your router will be stored by number. Unfortunately, these numbers are likely to change whenever you reconfigure your router. In order to work around this you can get cfgmaker to produce a configuration which is based on Ip numbers, or even Interface Descriptions. Check cfgmaker

If you get an error message complaining about no such name or no response, your community name is probably wrong.

Now, let's take a look at the mrtg.cfg file that was created.

In Perl, a # is a comment, synonymous with REM in DOS.

Add the following to the top of the mrtg.cfg file:

WorkDir: c:\www\mrtg

MAKE MRTG RUN ALL THE TIME

Starting MRTG by hand every time you want to run it is not going to make you happy I guess.

There is a special option you can set in the MRTG configuration file so so that MRTG will not terminate after it was started. Instead it will wait for 5 minutes and then run again.

Add the option

 RunAsDaemon: yes

to your mrtg.cfg file and start it with:

 start /Dc:\mrtg-2.16.2\bin wperl mrtg --logging=eventlog mrtg.cfg

Additional Prerequisites

MRTG must be installed and fully configured on the target system. In the following exercise the assumption is that MRTG is installed under c:\mrtgand all the sample files use this location.
Microsoft Tools SRVANY.exe (Applications as Services Utility) and INSTSRV.exe (Service Installer) - Those files can be downloaded from Microsoft as a part of Windows 2000 Resource Kit at http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/techinfo/reskit/tools/default.asp. They are also available from other locations such as http://www.electrasoft.com/srvany/srvany.htm, http://www.iopus.com/guides/srvany.htm, etc. Detailed instructions on how to use this package are available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q137890/. In order to follow the steps in this HOW-TO you MUST obtain both executables.
You must have administrative rights on the target system.

Preparation

Please complete the following steps before starting the installation:

Copy srvany.exe and instsrv.exe to c:\mrtg\bin\ (your MRTG bin directory).

Create a file called mrtg.reg anywhere on your system and paste the following content into it:

Service Installation

Once again, assuming that MRTG is already fully installed and configured on the target system under c:\mrtg\ the following steps are necessary to setup MRTG as a service.

Using the command prompt go into the temporary directory where you unzipped the package. When there type the following command to create a service named "MRTG" in the Windows Services management console:

instsrv MRTG c:\mrtg\bin\srvany.exe

Now you need to create the App* entries required for the new service. You can do this by either right-clicking on the mrtg.reg file and selecting 'merge' or by running the following command:

 regedit /s mrtg.reg

How to have root access to callmanager 6.x and 7.x Testing

There is 2 ways to do this.

-One is to modify the permission of the grub configuration using a Knoppix CD, then
becoming a "semi" root and then injecting the newly created user to the shadow
and passwd files. Now this option is also a great option specially
when you have 2 versions Of Unified Communications Manager running
on the BOX, for example UC 6.X in the inactive partition and UC 7 in
the active partition, the complete process will be in the other lesson :), this process
is a little bit complicated but it works like a champ when you have
2 versions running in the server, also you will need to know the
partition structure to boot up succesfully, although after trying
couple of times I found out that you will need to boot from the
/dev/sda2 single to gain complete access, if you boot from another
sda's, root will not perform as "super root" this one took me a
while to find out.

-Before proceeding I am assuming that you have already a working
Unified Communications Manager 6 or 7 running in an approved MCS server.
-Download an iso of CentOS 5.2 CD DIsk 1
-Transfer the image to a CD
-Insert the CD into the Drive
-Turn on the Server
-Let the server boot from the CD
-On the CentOS startup screen, type linux rescue and press enter
boot: linux rescue
-Select the appropiate language
-Select the Country
-Select if you want to start the network service or not, if so
-Highlight eth0
-Configure eth0
-Continue the pre-boot process
-The server will continue the booting process until you are in the shell
-Once in the shell type
#chroot /mnt/sysimage
#lsattr /etc/passwd /etc/group /etc/shadow /etc/gshadow
#chattr -i /etc/passwd /etc/shadow /etc/group /etc/gshadow
#useradd [enter a desire username] <---such as cesar #passwd [enter the newly desired username] <----this will create a password for the new user twice #usermod -g root [your new username] <---this will add this user to the root group, although you are not a real superuser, but you can move around freely connecting to the unified communications manager console. #service network start <---this will really start the network services #service sshd start <-----this will start the ssh server #ifup eth0 <------this will turn up the eth0 for sure! Great, we are almost done, now while you are here you can do the following -Mount a USB Drive for example, so you can copy files between the server and your USB drive. -To do this. -Insert the USB drive -while on the shell type #cd /etc/dev #ls -Look for the newly mounted USB drive, it should be something like (sdb1), if so proceed to mount the usb drive by doing the following: #mount sdb1 /mnt/usb -Your USB drive should now be mounted and ready for use. You can also mount the USB drive permanently as well, but thats on a later lesson... -Remenber that this newly created account it will not let you do much, but you can browse around while using the new user and remotely via ssh. Now if you want to modify a file remotely and this file is secured..You may need to log in as root first, change the permission of the file, so you can later modify the file using the new user account you just created. How to change a file permissions? #chmod 777 [filename] -It will be a good idea to put the file back to the original permissions settings after you have modify it, this just to keep the integrity of the file structure. :::::::::::::::::::::::;Please read carefully before doing anything else::::::::: Anything you do from here it may cause the Unified Communications Manager not to start!! -Now while on the root shell you can change the permissions on any file you want to modify, remenber you cant do this on the user you just have created...this is because you will still need to move out the root account out of the equation by doing the following #usermod -u 20000 root #usermod -u 0 [your new username] ****NOTE:At this point you are now the super user of the box, but when you do this Unified communications Manager may not start properly...So BECAREFUL!! -Also while in root we can go ahead and modify iptables for example to install webmin and manage the box via web port 10000, although you may need to install couple of other scripts, but not hard. Also if you are not a "vi" fanatic, go ahead and install nano via usb or by using the wget command, again you may also need some other scripts to run nano, and of course access to the internet. *Also FYI The platform user belongs to the following groups. administration sftpuser platform tomcat ccmbase ccmsyslog The root user belongs to the following groups. Wheel root bin daemon sys adm disk -Remenber how you allocate your user and groups, it will mandate it's access.

After reviewing several corners, I thought, wait why add another user, play
with the groups allocations and all that, when can just access the Unified Communications
Manager like a member of Cisco TAC would?, I mean what I am trying to accomplish
here is to access the box and at the same time maintain the integrity of the box
as much as possible, without modifying too many things on the UCM server platform

So, I will call this the Remote Account Process.

On a working server or environment we will do the following:
-Connect to the UCM Console using an SSH Client
-Proceed to a enable a remote account
admin:utils remote_account enable
-Proceed to create a remote_account user
admin:utils remote_account create [ournew_remote_account_username] [amount of day's that
we want this account to remain active]
example
admin:utils remote_account create ciscotac 30
-the above example will create a remote account user named ciscotac and it will be valid
for 30 days.
-Once we have succesfully created a remote_account we will proceed to reboot the server
cleanly.
admin:utils system restart
-Proceed to insert the CentOS 5.2 Disk 1
-on the Boot option enter linux rescue
boot:linux rescue
-Once you are in the linux shell
-Proceed to do the following
#lsattr /etc/passwd /etc/group /etc/shadow /etc/gshadow
#chattr -i /etc/passwd /etc/shadow /etc/group /etc/gshadow
#passwd [enter the username that you have created for the remote account user]
-Enter the new password that you want for the new remote account user twice
-eject the CentOS 5.2 DISK 1
-Reboot the server by doing the following
#shutdown -r now
-Once Unified Communications Manager have completed rebooted, simply using an SSH
client login to UCM using the remote account username and password, you will see
the following message

CCM 5.o Password Reset

You must have physical access to the console - ssh won't work.

1. Make sure there's nothing in the DVD drive to start with.
2. Log onto the system via the console with the account name
"pwrecovery" and the password "pwreset"
3. Insert UC Mgr. DVD
4. The utility will tell you what the login is and prompt you to
change the password. The password must be at least 6 characters long and
not trivial.

How to install Call Manager 6.x in VMWare

Installing CUCM 6.x in VMWare is much easier. Cisco did a great job with CUCM 6.x in terms of allowing you to install the software in a virtual machine without needing to hack the system.

There are not really any tricks to installing Cisco Communications Manager 6.x in VMWare. I have used vmware player with easyvmx.com as well as VMWare Server.

Update: This is not mentioned in the video, but I have noticed very strange issues when using a SCSI hard drive for CUCM. A SCSI hard drive is created by default. You will need to delete the SCSI hard drive, create a new hard drive and select IDE.

Here are the basic steps:

1. Create a virtual machine with your favorite VMWare Product
2. Configure the virtual machine with enough disk space and RAM to meet CUCM installation requirements
3. Insert your CUCM 6.x installation CD
4. Complete the Installation Wizard
5. Wait for the install to complete

If you have the CDs, you can create an ISO from the CDs with LC ISOCreator

You've probably read that rice prices are soaring. This affects the organizations delivering food aid to nations in need, in a profound way. "The UN has issued an urgent plea for food aid...the agency's World Food Program, which dispenses food to developing countries, said it needs an additional $755 million US just to meet its annual target. The sudden rise in the prices for corn, wheat, rice and soybeans has sparked violent protests in Haiti, Africa and parts of Asia." (Source: The Globe and Mail, Saturday April 26).

The New Revolution: Open Source in the Enterprise

Open source technologies can be traced back to the late 1970s when Richard Stallman, a former programmer at MIT A1 Laboratories, launched the GNU Project and Free Software Foundation. The ultimate goal of the GNU project was to produce a free operating system. Since then there has been some significant GNU projects such as Apache (a www Server), Perl (interpreted program language) Mozilla (a www browser) and Linux open source operating systems supported by companies such as Redhat Corporation.

Today’s commercial information system architectures are complex in nature with many commercial vendors providing solutions in the areas of document management, company intranet portals, knowledge management, incident tracking, business intelligent reporting just to name a few. In many of these cases, you will be able to find open source equivalents that provide similar functionality.

There is several advantages in using open source solutions, these can be categorised into two major benefits (1) cost advantages (2) operational and functional advantages. Open source solutions to a large extent do not possess any significant license implications however you would be utilising a subscription based costing model thereby reducing upfront costs. From a operational and functional aspect these solutions are based on the LAMP application stack (Linux Apache MySQL and PHP) which are proven and stable/reliable platforms. Secondly, if an organisation is satisfied with the functionality of the open source solution, the upgrade path is determined by the organisation and not pushed by a third party vendor organisation. In most cases, the upgrade of commercial information system solutions is a expensive and taxing exercise which most small to medium (SME) business do not possess the time or money to undertake.

Over the last few years, there has been some key acquisitions of open source companies, including Sun Microsystems purchase of MySQL for a USD $1 Billion, Yahoo’s acquisition of Zimbra for USD $350 Million, Microsoft’s purchase of SpringSource for an undisclosed amount and Oracle Corporation’s purchase of Sleepycat. This trend is supported by a leading consultancy organisations Gartner who predict that by 2012, 80 percent of all commercial software will include elements of open source technology. Gartner conclude by saying that “Many open sourced technologies are mature, stable and well supported. Traditionally, one of the key barrier to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) adopting open source technology solutions has been due to the lack of support in implementing open source solutions. However, there are now many organisations which assist companies to translate their information technology landscape to utilise open source technology solutions. Open source technology solutions have also matured significantly during the last few years and can comfortably provide an effective alternative to commercial applications.

Open source technologies are particularly useful for companies that are seeking to re-structure their business processing. The advent of the internet has triggered the commercial market place for many companies to be global. Many SME’s are finding that with along with their global marketing exposure, certain business processes such as inventory management, product cataloguing accounting practices and logistics all require process improvement to compete in a competitive market. Open source solutions such as SugarCRM (open source customer relationship management application), OpenPro Inventory management software, and SQL Ledger (an double entry Enterprise Resource Planning software) provide solutions to improve these processes.

Microsoft Searches Jump 15% After Live Cashback Launch

This isn’t enough data to declare Microsoft’s much derided Live Cashback search product a winner, but the first full month after it launched (June) shows a 15% gain in search volume v. the previous month, according to Comscore. This erases the previous month’s losses, bringing Microsoft up to 9.2% overall search share.

Live Search CashBack gives advertisers the option of offering users a direct rebate for purchases made after searching on Microsoft. The product shifts search advertising from cost-per-click (CPC) to cost-per-action (CPA) and give a lot of the revenue back to users.

Live Search Cashback isn’t designed to grab a ton of market share away from Google and Yahoo, but Microsoft is hopeful that more users will come to them when doing searches around buying goods online. And those queries tend to bring in the lion’s share of advertising dollars

Web 2.0 software developers ranked Microsoft's MSN/Live Windows developer program higher than competing programs offered by Internet leaders Google, Yahoo, Amazon, eBay, Facebook and PayPal, according to results of an Evans Data Corp. report released today.

The "Users' Choice: Web 2.0 Developer Programs" report is based on the results of a survey of more than 400 developers, who rated developer programs from the seven companies in 13 categories, including API functionality, blogs, marketing assistance tools/SDKs, Web services, documentation, support and forums. The Google Inc. and Yahoo Inc. programs were ranked right after Microsoft Corp.'s. While the recent opening of Facebook's development platform has garnered lots of attention for the social network, it ranked next to last among the seven Web 2.0 development programs included in the survey. Amazon.com Inc. and eBay Inc. also ranked higher than Facebook, with all of them ahead of last place PayPal Inc.

Microsoft scored high in user satisfaction for its Web services, software development kits, documentation and forums. In the Web services category, Microsoft came in on top this year after ranking last in the year-earlier survey.

"As Microsoft moved from the relatively closed-in MSN portal to the more Web 2.0 savvy Windows Live collection of services, users have begun to recognize it as a provider of top-notch Web services," according to the survey.

Google ranked second among the surveyed developers by scoring high on API functionality, available marketing assistance for Web 2.0, a solutions directory and options for ongoing communications like RSS. Yahoo ranked third in overall developer programs, dropping from its second-place finish in last year's Evans survey. The researcher said that Yahoo benefited from what users called strong technical resources. EBay dropped from third to fourth place in this year's ranking, with lower grades for its Web services program. The online auctioneer did get strong marks for the functionality of its APIs, marketing assistance, forums and SDKs. Facebook ranked sixth out of the seven developer programs in its first year in the survey. The most highly ranked feature of the Facebook program is the functionality of its APIs.

"While the company's API functionality is rated very high by developers (placing third among the field of seven), Facebook lacks the support resources to help developers," the study said. "Facebook fares poorly among users of its APIs for the available documentation, marketing assistance and ongoing communications. While there is tremendous interest in the Facebook social networking platform, Facebook still has not capitalized on the buzz by providing the supporting information to continue driving developer interest."

The report went on to note that Microsoft and Google allow users to profit the most from the applications they develop, through their integration capabilities and lack of downtime. According to Evans, 26% of developers using Microsoft's MSN/Live programs said they have generated "significant" profits from it, while 23% said the same for PayPal, 15% for Amazon, 13% for Google and 10% for Facebook. Meanwhile, 38% of developers said they had not benefited financially from using eBay's developer program, while 36% said the same for Yahoo, 33% for Amazon, 27% for Google , 20% for PayPal and 9% for Microsoft.

Developers say they have had the most difficulty integrating their applications using the Facebook technologies -- 77% said they had experienced at least some degree of difficulty integrating Facebook technologies with their apps. Facebook was followed by eBay and Yahoo as the hardest to integrate. Only 40% of developers said that Amazon technologies are difficult to integrate, while 45% said the same of Google. The companies that developers said offer the strongest integration capabilities are Microsoft, Amazon and Google.

New Memory Capacity on Cisco 2600XM Series Multiservice Router

Two new features are being introduced on all Cisco® 2600XM Series multiservice routers. The first is a new 128-MB synchronous dynamic RAM (SDRAM) dual in-line memory module (DIMM) for use in all new and existing Cisco 2600XM Series multiservice routers. This new 128-MB DIMM offers higher-density memory, providing the ability to support memory increases to 256 MB of DRAM (with the correct ROM monitor [ROMmon]). All Cisco 2650XM Multiservice Router, Cisco 2651XM Multiservice Router, and Cisco 2600XM bundles and upgrades to 128 MB of DRAM are now shipping with one 128-MB SDRAM DIMM instead of two 64-MB SDRAM DIMMs. This allows for the second slot to remain open for future memory expansion up to 256 MB.

The second announcement is a new internal ROMmon on all Cisco 2600XM Series multiservice routers. This new ROMmon simply provides the "future ability" to upgrade the Cisco 2600XM Series to 256-MB DRAM. Currently the maximum memory used by Cisco IOS® Software is 128 MB. Some future Cisco IOS Software releases will use more than 128 MB of memory and will require this new ROMmon support to provide access to memory between 128 MB and 256 MB. Cisco IOS Software usage of more than 128 MB of SDRAM (in specific software images) is scheduled for October 2004 or sooner.

Changes are being made to address the following:

• Support for up to 256 MB of DRAM for future memory increases past Cisco IOS Software Release 12.3 Mainline

• Memory scalability for greater feature and service enhancements in Cisco IOS Software releases 12.4T and 12.5M

• Ability for customers to maximize memory capacity for future growth, without adding future service costs for adding memory at a later date.

Cisco New Routers - Everything but the Kitchen Sink

It seems everyone is talking about Cisco’s new routers that were launched todayI just got off a phone briefing with Cisco to discuss their new routers.

Essentially, today Cisco introduced what they are terming the new "Cisco Integrated Services Router Portfolio". The basic aim of the new line of routers is “our goal is an integrated systems approach to embedded services speeds IP communications deployments, while reducing operating costs and complexity.”

It’s a Router, it’s an IP-PBX, and it’s Voicemail All Rolled In One…
The new router line features secure voice, call processing, voicemail, auto attendant, voice trunks, transcoding, and conferencing – all in one integrated platform. Cisco has thrown everthing but the kitchen sink into their new routers!

Indeed they have embedded and integrated functionality for deployment flexibility, including motherboard digital signal processing slots for voice/fax modules, Cisco CallManager Express call processing, Cisco Unity Express voicemail and auto attendant, voice module for increased analog & BRI densities, as well as voice signaling encryption via embedded Virtual Private Network (VPN) hardware. They’ve also added DSP flexibility by letter customers choose the number of DSPs they need. In addition, it now has support for the Cisco Communicator and the cool Cisco 7970 Color Phone, as seen here:

Further, I have learned that Cisco is preparing Linux-based cards to go with the new routers, allowing them to run applications not based on the company's Internetwork Operating System (IOS). To power all of this “included” functionality, Cisco has definitely added some “punch” to their new router line. The new line has 5X better voice density, 7X performance, and 4X memory - all while bringing down the price point to compete with Juniper Networks which recently acquired Netscreen Technologies. But here’s the key difference - while Juniper Networks does a good job of integrating firewall, VPN, intrusion detection, anti-virus, and other security mechanisms, there is one thing sorely lacking. Take a wild guess…. they’re lacking VoIP support. That’s a big piece of the puzzle that Cisco has neatly integrated into their product line. I for one cannot think of a single major router company other than Cisco that has advanced VoIP support!

Microsoft’s Annual Revenue Reaches $60 Billion

Fastest annual revenue growth since 1999 fuels 32% increase in earnings per share.

Microsoft Corp. today announced revenue of $15.84 billion for the fiscal fourth quarter ended June 30, 2008, an 18% increase over the same period of the prior year. Operating income and diluted earnings per share for the quarter were $5.68 billion and $0.46, representing growth of 42% and 48%, respectively, over the same period of the prior year.

For the fiscal year ended June 30, 2008, Microsoft announced revenue of $60.42 billion, an 18% increase over the prior year. Operating income and diluted earnings per share for the year were $22.49 billion and $1.87, representing yearly growth of 21% and 32%, respectively.

The growth rates for operating income and diluted earnings per share were impacted by a $1.1 billion charge in the fourth quarter of fiscal year 2007 related to the expansion of the company's Xbox 360 warranty coverage.

"Delivering $60 billion in annual revenue is an outstanding accomplishment and a testament to the powerful combination of great technology solutions and strong execution by our partners and global sales and marketing teams," said Kevin Turner, chief operating officer at Microsoft. "The outlook for fiscal year 2009 is positive given the breadth of our impressive technology portfolio and the expanding collection of online services we are bringing to market."

This fiscal year marked the launch of Microsoft's flagship server products: Windows Server 2008, SQL Server 2008 and Visual Studio 2008. Revenue growth was primarily driven by continued customer demand for all products, including Windows Vista, which has sold over 180 million licenses since launch, the 2007 Microsoft Office system, server software, and Xbox 360 consoles and games.

"We had a strong finish in the fourth quarter, which capped off an impressive year for the company. We grew revenue 18% for the year with earnings per share significantly outpacing that," said Chris Liddell, chief financial officer at Microsoft. "Looking forward, despite difficult economic conditions, we will build upon the momentum exiting fiscal year 2008 and expect to deliver another year of double-digit revenue and earnings growth in fiscal year 2009."

Business Outlook

Microsoft management offers the following guidance for the quarter ending September 30, 2008:

•	Revenue is expected to be in the range of $14.7 billion to $14.9 billion.
•	Operating income is expected to be in the range of $5.9 billion to $6.0 billion.
•	Diluted earnings per share are expected to be $0.47 or $0.48.

Management offers the following guidance for the full fiscal year ending June 30, 2009:

Does Astrology Have A Rational, Scientific Basis?

Is there any conceivable way that the celestial location of stars, planets, and nebulae at the time of one’s birth could influence an individual’s personality, career, health, marriage and a host of other personal events?

The origin of astrology lies in pagan superstition. But does it work? Until the sixteenth century, the earth was believed to be the center of the universe, with the sun, moon, planets and stars revolving around this all-important center of activity.

But the heliocentric universe of Copernicus (1543) dethroned the earth. And since then, the advance of astronomical knowledge has relentlessly pushed the earth farther and farther from any privileged position in the cosmos. The sun too, has been demoted to an inconspicuous suburb in a rather unexceptional galaxy, in a relatively small group of galaxies, in a universe of uncounted billions of stars.

In such a universe, it becomes increasingly difficult to believe the heavens were created to have some sort of special influence on the earth and on individual humans in particular. How could such an influence occur? Through gravity? Radiation?

The immense distances encountered in the universe - usually measured in light years - rule out any such influences. The gravitational attraction of the doctor standing at the delivery table would be far greater than the gravitational influence of any star or galaxy, on a new-born baby.

And the radiation form even the brightest star would be thousands of times weaker than a single light bulb in the delivery room.

The conclusion seems inescapable: No known force emanating from the constellations of the heavens could be expected to exert a unique, life-long influence on anyone.

Even if the stars did exert an ever so subtle influence at the time of an individual’s birth, can anyone seriously believe their influence is important when compared to the multitude of much stronger environmental forces on earth that directly affect our lives?

All life on earth is affected by periodic changes in the environment. Such cyclic variations are often the basis for natural rhythms called biological clocks. The most obvious example is the rising and setting of the sun; a daily cycle of light and dark which directly affects the activities of virtually all pants and animals.

The seasons, caused by the earth’s revolution around the sun, also have a marked annual influence on living things. Similarly, the tides, driven primarily by the gravitational attraction of the moon, affect countless creatures in the sea on roughly a 12-hour basis.

Research has demonstrated that man too may be perceptibly influenced by lunar and solar radiation and/or gravitational attraction. However, such celestial cycles operate on all men, regardless of when or where they were born. Indeed, the readjustment of one’s biological clock after a change in environment - as occurs in “jet-lag” - proves that such biological cycles are not immutably fixed. Rather, each persons bio-clock can be revised and reset numerous times throughout one’s life as the environment changes.

There’s no question that biological rhythms and clocks are often linked tot he motions of the sun and moon. But this in no way justifies the belief that astrological signs and the position of the stars, planets, sun or moon at the time of birth can be used to predict one’s future.

The Bible labels the worship of the heavens as idolatry (Deut. 4:15, 19, RSV). Of course, astrology buffs can always claim that they are not really worshipping the heavens; just relying on them for certain “important’ information. Yet the fact remains that astrology has no scientific basis.

The prophet Daniel encountered astrologers in Nebuchadnezzar’s court: “Then came in the magicians, the astrologers, the Chaldeans, and the soothsayers: and I told the dream before them: but they did not make known unto me the interpretation thereof” (Dan.4:7). Daniel found the astrologers totally ineffective. And so have modern-day scientific studies.

“The astrologer is often better able to read his clients wishes than to predict the alleged destiny implicit in the celestial bodies,” said professor of philosophy, Paul Kurtz. “Yet the true believer still insists that astrology is basically true in some mysterious way.”

“There are obviously millions of people who believe this astrology stuff,” said Dr. Linus Pauling, twice a Nobel Prize winner, “and I think it is worthwhile to explain that it has nothing whatever to do with scientific fact.”

In the final analysis, the overwhelming evidence is that astrology is little more than an entertaining form of pseudo-sophisticated superstition.

$500 Oil, are the Liberals happy?

Williem Buiter paints a gloomy picture about a world with $500 oil. He thinks when it comes to Oil prices, "sky is the limit". With ever increasing demand from places like India and China, he thinks Oil prices will continue to rise in spite of a global economic slowdown, all of which he thinks will adversely affect the poor.

I find that plausible. High oil prices may not be the driving factor behind Sri Lanka's inflation, but it does have a say in everyone's cost of living.

This reminds me of an exchange between me and friend , where he (and a surprising number of my liberal tree-hugging friends, I might add) think that this high oil prices is actually a "good thing". Their argument is that high oil prices will lead to behavioral changes towards less energy use and incentivise alternative energy use I certainly agree but I don't think that's is enough to call high oil prices a "good thing". You will have to consider adverse consequences on the poor and commerce in general before coming into such conclusions. Forgetting all of that is succumbing into the church-of-gore global warming hysteria, which by the way, Idon't think of as being "hippie" but simply, elitist. American-liberals shouldn't impose their values to people who cannot afford them. The same goes for democrat obsession about imposing environmental and labor standards in trade agreements for countries which can barely afford them.

For my part, I don't think of high oil as being either good or bad, high prices just are. In some ways, we should be happy about it. This means that millions of Indians, Chinese (and even some Sri Lankans) are climbing out of poverty and able to afford automobiles and in general, more quality of life. For some reason, this part of the story is often neglected.

However, I'm not as optimistic about the benefits of high oil rise, particularly for developing countries. There are several reasons for this,

First, thanks to high taxes and inefficient refinery, we already have higher gasoline prices at the pump, compared to the U.S. even without considering the heavy subsidies given to cover the daily losses of the state-run Ceylon Petroleum Corporation.

Secondly, any breakthrough from alternative-energy research is unlikely to be spawned by places like Sri Lanka, although my Indian friends might beg to differ. So while global price rise may indeed help incentivise alternative energy research and adaptation, it doesn't justify high taxes in places like Sri Lanka.

Thirdly, behavioral changes in the magnitude that we are seeing in the U.S. and other developed countries are unlikely to be seen in places like Sri Lanka. This is because, high consumption of gasoline in the U.S. is partly due to exuberance -- air travel, SUVs, long trips, so on. and when gas prices rise, Americans change their behavior. So SUV sales are down and Americans are driving less. But consumption of gasoline in places like Sri Lanka has more to do with necessity. Most Sri Lankans use public transport, which doesn't have good alternatives. As for people who are used to driving cars, public transport won't be appealing, given it's poor quality. So even if behavioral changes come (and it will) they will be smaller compared to the U.S. and at a greater cost in terms of living standards of average Sri Lankans.

So no, I don't think high oil prices are a good thing.

But I do have faith in human ingenuity, that when price of oil becomes unsustainable we will find alternatives. I don't know what that alternative is, I don't know whether it's solar, wind or nuclear. I don't know whether we will drive electric cars, or cars which runs on water or hydrogen. But what I do know is we will keep on driving.

For much of human existence, petroleum was a useless, gooey, waste product, until we figured out we can use it for energy. Similarly, we will find something else which can serve the same purpose. Humankind got out of the stone age, not because we ran out of stone, but because we found out new and better things. Similarly, we will come out of the oil-age, with something new and better. But in the meantime, let's be rational about the benefits of high priced oil.

Ryan Sidebottom ended England's long wait for an overseas victory by claiming a five-wicket haul to secure a 126-run triumph over New Zealand in the second Test.

The Nottinghamshire seamer grabbed two wickets on the final morning at Wellington to finish with five for 105 as New Zealand were dismissed for 311 despite a battling 85 from wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum.

It was only England's second win in 17 overseas Tests and their first Test triumph of any kind for eight matches.

The teams will now head to Napier for a series decider starting on Friday.

Resuming on 242 for six needing a further 196 runs to claim victory, the Kiwis were under pressure from the start with Sidebottom claiming the key wicket of captain Daniel Vettori with the 12th ball of the day.

Vettori, who has already claimed two half-centuries in the series, was capable of forging a major partnership with hard-hitting McCullum, but failed to make a run before edging Sidebottom low to Alastair Cook at third slip.

But far from open up an end for England, Kyle Mills arrived at the crease with attacking intentions and got off the mark with a superbly-timed cover drive for four off Sidebottom.

McCullum completed his half-century with a chop into the ground off Stuart Broad which flew over the slip cordon to the third man boundary.

He lost Mills just three overs later, however, when Sidebottom found the right line and length and swung the ball into his pads to win an lbw verdict from umpire Rudi Koertzen.

New batsman Mark Gillespie lasted 11 overs with McCullum before England brought James Anderson into the attack for the first time in the morning.

Given pain-killers to overcome his injured left ankle after his first over, Anderson struck in his second with Gillespie edging a short ball behind to wicketkeeper Tim Ambrose.

Faced with Chris Martin as his partner, McCullum had no option but to hit out and fell in the next over when he drove left-arm spinner Monty Panesar to long on where, fittingly, Sidebottom claimed the catch to complete the emphatic victory.

Imtiaz Patel to succeed Speed as ICC chief

Imtiaz Patel, chief executive of Supersport, the South African broadcast network, will succeed Malcolm Speed as the ICC's chief executive when he steps down in June. The ICC executive board, which met in Dubai on Monday, also named IS Bindra, the former president of the Indian board, as principal advisor, a new role.

Patel and Bindra were shortlisted by a four-man ICC sub-committee comprising the ICC president, Ray Mali, the president-elect, David Morgan, the Cricket Australia chairman Creagh O'Connor, and the president of the BCCI, Sharad Pawar.

Patel, a South African of Indian origin, is seen as a compromise candidate after concern among other ICC member nations over an Indian stranglehold on world cricket affairs had Bindra become the chief executive. A teacher before becoming development director at the United Cricket Board of SA - the forerunner of the current national body - in 1991, he joined SuperSport in 1999 and rose through the ranks to be its chief executive.

It is understood that the Bindra-Patel arrangement was worked out over the last "two or three days" between the Indian board and other ICC members. The BCCI had initially pushed hard for Bindra and the prospect of an age bar ruling out its candidate saw its president, Sharad Pawar, writing a letter to the ICC pointing out flaws in the argument.

The appointment bypasses concerns over a possible Indian stranglehold with Sharad Pawar in line to take over the top job from Morgan in two years. At the same time, the BCCI will have a key man in the top levels of the ICC keeping a tab on, and influencing, major decisions.

Bindra, 66, himself was reportedly not to keen to relocate to, and work in, Dubai on a full-time basis, especially since he is on the governing council of the Indian Premier League (IPL). He recently told that he would also have to take into account his daughter's education, and his position as head of the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA), the local association for the Mohali franchise.

An ICC official said Bindra will be based in India and will be available to it whenever necessary to provide guidance.

"We are delighted that Imtiaz is the board's choice for the post of the next chief executive," Mali said. "I have no doubt that if he accepts the position he will do a great job."

Morgan, who also takes over his post in June, said: "We are now negotiating the details of Mr Patel's engagement. In anticipation of an early completion to that negotiation, I do look forward to working closely with him during my presidency. These are exciting and busy times for world cricket and I know that Mr Patel will bring his wide range of skills and broad knowledge of the game to the table in a way that will benefit cricket as a whole.

"This has been a rigorous selection process and I am satisfied that we have exhausted every avenue to find the best person for the job. We are now in the process of negotiating the details with Mr Patel before he can be officially appointed."

The BCCI secretary, Niranjan Shah, told Bindra's appointment was "an honour for a major cricket nation like India ... Bindra is a man with great experience in cricket administration and his contribution at the highest level will be valuable."

Australia welcomes Hair's reinstatement as cricket Test umpire

SYDNEY (AFP) — Cricket Australia welcomed Darrell Hair's reinstatement as a Test umpire Wednesday and said the controversial official should be able to oversee matches in any Test nation, including Pakistan.

The Australian was barred from standing in top-level cricket matches following an abandoned Test between England and Pakistan in 2006, which ended with Pakistan conceding the first Test forfeit in the game's history.

Cricket Australia spokesman Peter Young said Hair remained one of the game's most technically proficient officials and welcomed the International Cricket Council's decision Tuesday to reinstate him to the elite umpire's panel.

"We're pleased to see Darrell back," Young told AFP. "Cricket Australia has always had a view that he is, in a technical sense, an excellent umpire, one of the best two or three in the world.

"World cricket needs good umpires, it's got good umpires but it needs more rather than less, so it's pleasing to see him back and we look forward to seeing him back on the circuit."

Hair has said he will be prepared to umpire in Pakistan if called upon to do so, although the Pakistan Cricket Board have shown no sign of altering their stance that what they regard as Hair's error of judgement in the 2006 Test makes him unfit to officiate top level matches.

Young said CA believed Hair's reinstatement meant he was eligible to umpire in all Test-playing nations.

"It's an ICC issue but we would support the notion that the ICC should be able to send him wherever it wants to send him in the world whenever it wants to send him according to its rostering of umpires," he said.

Sri Lanka cricket tour of Pakistan hits IPL roadblock

COLOMBO (AFP) — Sri Lanka's proposed series of one-day internationals against Pakistan next month is in jeopardy due to a clash of dates with the cash-rich Indian Premier League.

Sri Lanka had offered to play in the short series following a pull-out by Australia from a full tour of Pakistan in March-April due to security concerns.

But the dates of the series -- from April 23 to May 5 -- are in direct clash with the inaugural Twenty20 league, to be played over 44 days at various venues in India from April 18 to June 1.

The lure of playing in the cash-rich IPL ahead of the Pakistan series could prompt top Sri Lankan players to shun their national colours, media reports said Sunday.

Captain Mahela Jayawardene, key batsman Kumar Sangakkara and spin wizard Muttiah Muralitharan are among a host of Sri Lankan players contracted to play in the IPL.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), the governing body for the sport here, would be helpless to prevent the players from playing in the league as they are currently bound only by the West Indies tour contract, The Nation reported.

It said the players, currently in the West Indies to play two Tests and three one-day internationals, had deliberated at length over the clash.

"It is reliably learnt that there was a meeting amongst the Lankan cricketers on Friday at

Guyana on the next course of action they were to take if they don't get the required permission to play in the IPL," the daily said.

The Pakistan Cricket Board has said that it was willing to offer SLC 800,000 dollars for the series of five one-day internationals, slated to be held from April 23 to May 5, but only if they send their full team.

The clash of dates has apparently also upset the Indian Cricket Board with a top official reported to have expressed his displeasure over the Pakistan tour to his counterpart in Sri Lanka over telephone.

SLC chief Arjuna Ranatunga is banking on the Indian tour in July-August to pull the board out of financial difficulties. A possible Indian decision to cancel the tour would cost Sri Lanka more than a million dollars.

The Middlesex left-hander, without a century in his previous 31 Test innings, hit an unbeaten 173 as the tourists reached 416 for five by the close of the third day in Napier.

It eclipsed the 147 he scored against South Africa in Johannesburg three years ago, and helped put England into a dominant position.

He was followed to three figures by Ian Bell, another player under pressure to perform after 23 Test innings without a century, as England's top six finally delivered in their final innings of the series.

Strauss had scored just 97 runs in the previous five innings of the series having been brought back into the side after missing out in Sri Lanka before Christmas.

But he responded to the high stakes with his biggest Test innings and his first century since hitting 116 against Pakistan at Headingley in August, 2006 - 16 Tests ago.

He had started the day on 42 with England already 176 runs ahead on 91 for two with a responsibility to guide the tourists into a big enough lead to declare on a pitch looking flatter by the day.

He took nine overs to reach his first half-century in eight innings with a drive down the ground for four off Martin and helped forge a useful 63-run stand with Kevin Pietersen.

Pietersen had looked comfortable at the crease during the stand and seemed in control of his innings when he fell midway through the morning session.

Pushing forward defensively to left-arm spinner Daniel Vettori, Pietersen was beaten by the turn and edged low to allow Ross Taylor - filling in for the ill Stephen Fleming at the time - to take a fine low catch to his right.

But that was the last success New Zealand were able to celebratefor some time as Strauss and Ian Bell added 187 in a 50-over alliance.

Bell walked out to bat with just 140 runs to his name in his previous five innings but quickly decided to try and be dominant and launched Vettori over long on for an early six.

He reached his half century after only an hour and 20 minutes' batting, hitting eight fours and two sixes to reach the landmark, and provided the aggressive thrust of England's innings as Strauss crawled towards his crucial 11th Test century.

Warwickshire batsman Bell claimed his first hundred since hitting an unbeaten 109 against West Indies at Lord's last May shortly before tea with a top edge down to the fine-leg boundary for the 16th four of his innings.
But with big hundreds on offer to both batsmen on a flat wicket and against a New Zealand attack without seamer Kyle Mills and all-rounder Jacob Oram, Bell missed out when he chipped Vettori to mid-off for 110.
Paul Collingwood also failed to cash in on the conditions and situation and, after racing to 22 off 19 balls, gave a tame return catch to Vettori.
Their failures, however, spurred on Strauss to hit his first Test 150 and by the close had been batting for over seven hours and had hit 25 boundaries.

Historic win for Sri Lanka over Windies

PROVIDENCE (Guyana), March 27: Chaminda Vaas played a starring role with the ball, as Sri Lanka created a bit of history, when they completed a 121-run victory over West Indies in the opening Test on Wednesday.

Vaas captured five wickets for 61 runs from 22.2 overs and Muttiah Muralitharan took three for 112 from 45 overs, as West Indies, chasing a highly improbable, if impossible 437 for victory, were dismissed for 315 in their second innings about 15 minutes before the scheduled close.

Fittingly, it was the combination of Vaas and Muralitharan that formalised the result with 5.4 overs remaining.

Vaas delivered a rising ball to West Indies batting bunny Daren Powell which he tried to scoop over mid-off and Muralitharan back-pedalling held a remarkable catch reaching backwards to hand Sri Lanka a 1-0 lead in the two-Test series.

The victory however, did not come easy for Sri Lanka though, as Dwayne Bravo, Ramnaresh Sarwan, and West Indies captain Chris Gayle all collected half-centuries to extend the home team's innings deep into the last day at the Guyana National Stadium.

Sri Lanka's run to victory was made difficult by Bravo with the top score of 83; Sarwan, who hit his second half-century of the match of 72; and Gayle - batting down the order - made an unbeaten 51.

The Sri Lankans reduced West Indies to 278 for eight enter the final hour, after Thilan Thushara had Denesh Ramdin caught at slip for one, and Muralitharan had Sulieman Benn adjudged lbw for seven in the first hour after tea.

But Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene - as usual - put the fate of the visitors in the hands of Vaas and Muralitharan and they responded to the challenge.

Vaas had Jerome Taylor caught at second slip for 12, and thought he had won the game, when Powell turned his back on a short delivery from the same bowler, and it appeared he gloved it to Jayawardene at second slip.

Television replays showed it ricocheted from just above his left glove, but Vaas had the final say to make him a shoe-in for the Man-of-the-Match award with match figures of eight for 100 and an unbeaten 54 in the Sri Lanka first innings total of 476 for eight declared to boot.

But the victory had a tinge of controversy, as Sri Lanka benefitted from two questionable decisions in the final half-hour before tea to enhance their chances of victory.

Muralitharan was the beneficiary, when Ryan Hinds, again batting with the assistance of a runner because of a hamstring strain, was looking to bat through until the break.

The Sri Lanka off-spin legend bowled a delivery wide down the leg-side, and Hinds tried to swing it away behind square, and he was adjudged caught behind by umpire Simon Taufel.

Television replays seemed to suggest that Hinds did not make any contact, and Hinds unfortunately may face ICC Match Referee Chris Broad following the game for standing his ground.

Sri Lanka also appeared to benefit, when umpire Billy Bowden adjudged West Indies vice-captain Ramnaresh Sarwan lbw to Thilan Thushara for a well-played 72.

Television replays again showed that Thushara had run wide on the crease and his delivery appeared to be heading down the leg-side.

But there were no questions, when Chaminda Vaas bowled skillfully enough in the first hour after lunch to scalp Marlon Samuels caught behind for 10, and bowled Shivnarine Chanderpaul for three with a well-pitched delivery that breached the batsman's bat and pad.

The Sri Lankans had toiled for most of the morning before making a breakthrough just before West Indies reached lunch on 170 for two.

The Sri Lankans laboured for close to an hour and three-quarters before Muralitharan held a straightforward return catch to remove Dwayne Bravo for 83.

The visitors' hopes for early wickets were dashed, when Bravo and Sarwan stoutly resisted the Sri Lankan bowlers after West Indies continued from their bedtime total of 96 for one.

Sri Lanka began their attack with the spin bowling pair of Muralitharan and left-armer Rangana Herath, but neither posed a serious threat to Bravo and Sarwan.

This allowed Bravo to reach his 50 in the first half-hour, when he edged Muralitharan past slip fielder, Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene to third man for the seventh of his 10 fours which was adjudicated by the video umpire after Herath made a mad scramble to prevent the ball from reaching the boundary rope.

The Sri Lankans did not offer the West Indies' batsmen free runs though, and Sarwan had to wait until inside the final half-hour before the interval to reach his 50, when he cut Vaas' first delivery of the day through square cover for a single.

But the Sri Lankans finally reaped reward for their perseverance, when Bravo's petulance and Muralitharan's guile prevailed to bring to an end a record second-wicket stand for West Indies of 134 against these opponents.

Sri Lanka, eyeing a Test series victory for the first time in the Caribbean, have lost two and drawn two of their previous four Tests in this part of the World.
